How the sitemap generator works

It starts at the address you enter and follows the links on each page to other pages on the same site, up to 500 pages or as many as it reaches in about forty seconds.

It lists a page only if it answered as a web page, is not marked noindex, and is not blocked to every crawler by your robots.txt. Where a page names a canonical address on your site, the sitemap lists that address instead.

The result is a standard XML sitemap to download or copy. Nothing is stored on your site and nothing is submitted anywhere.

What to do with the file

Upload it to the root of your site so it answers at /sitemap.xml, then add a line to robots.txt: Sitemap followed by its full address.

A page that nothing links to cannot be found by following links, so add any such pages by hand. A site of more than 500 pages is better served by a sitemap your platform writes as pages change.

Common questions

Why are some of my pages missing?

The generator only finds pages that are linked from other pages it reached. Pages behind a login, linked only from scripts, marked noindex or blocked in robots.txt are left out on purpose.

Does it add lastmod dates?

No. It cannot know when a page last changed, and a wrong date is worse than none, so it leaves them out. That is allowed by the sitemap protocol.

Will it slow my site down?

No. It reads a few pages at a time with a pause between each, under the AfterLaunch crawler name, and stops after reading 500 pages. If your robots.txt sets a Crawl-delay of up to five seconds, it reads one page at a time at that pace; a longer one and it reads only the page you entered. It never follows a link or a redirect to another site.
