How Reddit citations differed across AI search engines

Promptwatch reported a fall in Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations in August 2026, from 3.83% in late July to 0.52% during 14 to 17 August¹. That prompted coverage in Search Engine Land and Forbes²³. We examined how Reddit appeared in our own cross-engine sample.

The reports discuss changes in ChatGPT’s search queries as a possible explanation¹⁴. A citation trend alone cannot isolate the cause. Profound had previously reported a drop and recovery in Reddit citations during 2025⁶, which is another reason to date such observations carefully.

Our data allows a comparison across the engines we measured. It uses a different retrieval path from ChatGPT Search, so the two measurements need to remain separate.

What we measured

We matched 3,183 company-and-question cells with usable results from all four engines, across 152 companies. That gives 12,732 records with the same question and company identifiers. It reduces differences in topic mix, but does not make the underlying retrieval products identical.

Reddit is in nearly half of Perplexity's answers and a third of Google's. On 1,735 of those questions at least one engine cited it.

The zero needs explaining before anything else does

We checked whether the ChatGPT API column returned other source domains. In the matched sample it cited youtube.com in 5.6% of answers, linkedin.com in 3.8%, medium.com in 3.3%, g2.com in 1.4% and github.com in 1.0%. The wider stored corpus contained 15,083 distinct domains for this path, but no reddit.com citation in the measured window.

Those checks show that the source collector returned domains other than Reddit. They do not establish why Reddit was absent or rule out every provider-specific difference in source handling.

The zero in our API data predates the reported August change in ChatGPT Search. It therefore cannot be used as a measurement of that change.

Our column used gpt-4o through the OpenAI Responses API with web search. Promptwatch measured ChatGPT Search. Ahrefs also reported Reddit citations from the consumer product⁵. These are different measurement surfaces, and a provider name alone does not identify which one was tested.

This study cannot explain the full difference between the app and API. It would take a comparison designed around those retrieval paths, with the same questions and collection window, to investigate that question.

The reported position at publication

At the article’s original publication on 31 August 2026, the cited Promptwatch tracker reported Reddit at about 1.5% over its preceding seven days¹. Treat that as a dated observation on ChatGPT Search, rather than a current rate for every OpenAI search product.

What this changes for you

The sample gives no reason to treat Reddit as absent from AI search as a whole. It remained a frequently cited source in our Perplexity and Google AI Overviews results. Whether it merits work in your category still depends on the relevant questions and discussions.

Ask a measurement provider which product and retrieval path its results represent. Our OpenAI API data cannot reproduce a change observed only inside the ChatGPT consumer app.

A useful report labels the surface, question set, collection dates and counting method. Those details let you judge whether two figures are comparable before changing a content plan.

Method

152 companies, 30 customer questions each, four engines, running continuously since 11 June 2026 and measured through 29 August. The cross-engine comparison uses the 3,183 company-and-question cells answered by all four. Citations are counted at the host level from each engine's own returned sources. Corpus-wide we hold 223,787 citations across 50,333 domains. Reddit shares for ChatGPT Search are Promptwatch's measurement and Ahrefs' Brand Radar, and the September 2025 recovery is Profound's. All of them are cited as theirs, not reproduced by us.
