Reddit did not leave AI search. It left one place people were looking.

In mid-August Reddit fell off a cliff in ChatGPT. Promptwatch measured its share of ChatGPT Search citations at 3.83% through late July, then 0.52% between 14 and 17 August, an 86% drop¹. Search Engine Land and Forbes picked it up²³, and the advice that followed was roughly what you would expect: Reddit is done, move the budget.

Two things have since been established by people with better data on that surface than we have, and both belong in front of ours. The drop tracks a change in how ChatGPT builds its searches rather than a judgement about Reddit: its use of the site: operator in fan-out queries went from about 0.4% to about 17% on 8 August¹⁴. And it has happened before. The same shape appeared in September 2025 and reversed within weeks. The trackers disagree on the size, Promptwatch having Reddit fall from roughly 14% to 2% and Profound from roughly 7% to 1% before recovering to about 3%⁶, but not on the recovery.

What nobody has published is the other three engines, asked the same questions on the same days. We had them running, so we went and looked.

What we measured

We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity the same buyer questions about the same companies, on the same days. For this we took the 3,183 questions where all four engines answered, across 152 companies. That is 12,732 answers with the topic, the phrasing, the timing and the company held constant, so the only thing varying between the columns is the engine.

Reddit is in nearly half of Perplexity's answers and a third of Google's. On 1,735 of those questions at least one engine cited it.

The zero needs explaining before anything else does

A flat zero is usually a broken parser, so we checked. On those same answers our ChatGPT column cites youtube.com 5.6% of the time, linkedin.com 3.8%, medium.com 3.3%, g2.com 1.4% and github.com 1.0%, and across the wider corpus it has returned 15,083 distinct domains. Platforms come back. Forums come back. reddit.com has not come back once, in any week, going back to 11 June.

That last date matters, because it separates two questions the coverage has been treating as one.

The first is why ChatGPT Search dropped Reddit in August. That one now has a decent answer, and it is not ours: the fan-out changed, and Reddit was not the target of it.

The second is why our ChatGPT column has never returned a Reddit link at all. Our zero predates the August collapse by two months. Whatever happened in mid-August did not happen to us, because there was nothing there to lose.

The reason is the surface. Our ChatGPT column is gpt-4o called through the OpenAI Responses API with its web search tool. Promptwatch measured ChatGPT Search, the thing your buyer actually opens. Ahrefs, measuring the product across general queries in July, has Reddit first at 16.7% of ChatGPT citations⁵. It is the same brand name over a different retrieval path, and the sources that come back are not the same sources.

We cannot tell you why the two diverge that completely. Reddit blocks crawlers in robots.txt and has a licensing deal with OpenAI, so the product plausibly answers from licensed content while the API search tool crawls and comes back empty. We have no way to test that and we are not claiming it.

Where Reddit stands today

Promptwatch's tracker has Reddit at about 1.5% of ChatGPT Search citations over the past seven days, off the floor and still well short of the 3.83% it held in July¹. That is one engine, on one of its two surfaces, and it is the only place among the four where the question is even live.

What this changes for you

If you were about to write Reddit off, don't. On real buyer questions it is still the single biggest source in two of the four engines we watch, and on the engine that dropped it, the last comparable drop reversed.

The more useful question is what your own tooling is attached to. If your AI visibility tool reads the OpenAI API, it could not have shown you the collapse in either direction, because Reddit was never in that pool to begin with. Ours reads that API too. We are telling you because the alternative is you finding out later.

So ask any vendor, us included, which surface their ChatGPT number comes from, and treat "ChatGPT" on its own as a non-answer. There are two of them and they disagree about the biggest source on the internet.

Method

152 companies, 30 buyer questions each, four engines, running continuously since 11 June 2026 and measured through 29 August. The cross-engine comparison uses the 3,183 company-and-question cells answered by all four. Citations are counted at the host level from each engine's own returned sources. Corpus-wide we hold 223,787 citations across 50,333 domains. Reddit shares for ChatGPT Search are Promptwatch's measurement and Ahrefs' Brand Radar, and the September 2025 recovery is Promptwatch's and Profound's. All of them are cited as theirs, not reproduced by us.
